The knowing-how is going
Most of what a good grower knows was never written down. Researchers on indigenous farming knowledge put it plainly: it may decline and disappear, and the gap it leaves between generations can only be filled by documenting it.
And the ground is getting harder to stand on. The FAO counts 395 million rural young people living where the climate is expected to cut what the land can produce, which makes agrifood work a less attractive living.
So: ask while there is someone to ask, write it down, publish it — failures included. An account that only reports good seasons is not worth reading.
Half the cycle gets paid for
You hear that exporting crops strips the nutrients out. For phosphorus on Australian farms it is the other way round: more goes on than comes off. Fertiliser covers that half, and covers it well.
Carbon is the half nobody buys. It is worth knowing what it does down there. Organic carbon lets a soil hold water and binds fine particles into crumbs, so roots and air can get through; as it breaks down it releases nitrogen and phosphorus in a form a plant can take up. A soil short of it dries fast, sets hard and holds on to nothing.
Now the awkward part. Most of the carbon that stays in a soil is the remains of microbes that lived and died there. Microbes eat what grew and rotted on the spot — roots, leaves, the last crop. So that carbon has to be grown in place, not delivered in a bag.
Half the cycle is paid for. The other half is not.
